Episode 101: Domestic Violence Doesn't Start with a Bruise: What Nobody Tells You Early On

Okay, real talk. We need to stop thinking domestic violence only looks like one thing. It doesn't start with a bruise, it starts way earlier than that, with a comment you brushed off, a mood swing you excused, a "that's just how he is" you told yourself one too many times. In this episode I sit down with Joplin Higgins (family lawyer, DV advocate, and someone who's seen every version of this story) to talk about what control actually looks like before it gets physical, and why so many of us miss it until we're years deep.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why the warning signs almost always show up way before things get "official," and why our gut usually knows before our brain catches up
  • How we're conditioned from girlhood to excuse bad behaviour ("he's just being a bit much because he likes you"), and why that conditioning follows us into adult relationships
  • The real, broader picture of what family violence includes, because it's so much more than physical, and if you've only been looking for bruises you might be missing everything else
  • Why leaving isn't the finish line, and what the after looks like when it comes to rebuilding trust in yourself
  • Where to actually go for support if this hits close to home, because you shouldn't have to figure this out alone

If any part of this made you pause, sit with that. And if you know someone who needs to hear it, send it their way today. If you're navigating separation or you just need someone in your corner who actually gets it, book a call, that's exactly what we're here for.
