They Said I Was “Too Dumb” To Be a Lawyer… So I Became One

Let me take you back to Year 10. I was the girl who almost didn’t pass. Teachers had expectations—and they were low. Like, “maybe you should try a trade” low. Not that there’s anything wrong with trades (my plumber is a lifesaver), but that wasn’t my path. I knew it.

The thing is, when people tell you you’re not good enough, you have two choices: shrink… or rise. Spoiler alert: I rose. But not without failing hard, pivoting often, and crying in my car more times than I care to admit.

This blog isn’t just a “yay me” moment—it’s the full story of how I went from academic failure to business owner, lawyer, and mental health advocate. If you’ve ever doubted yourself (or had others do it for you), read on.

How I Got Here (Spoiler: It Wasn’t a Straight Line)

I actually started in accounting—because I thought it was safe. But I hated it. It sucked the life out of me. So I pivoted to law, which turned out to be so much more my speed.

Was it easy? Hell no. I failed my first university law subject. Sat on the bathroom floor with a glass of wine, wondering if I’d made a huge mistake. But that moment lit something in me. I wasn’t done. I was just getting started.

Fast forward a few years—I opened Aqua Legal, then All Star Conveyancing, then Confetti Finance. And now? I get to do what I love and help people get through messy legal stuff without feeling like a number.

Mental Health and the Work That Changed Me

Here’s the part people don’t talk about: being a lawyer sometimes means being the last person someone speaks to before they give up. I’ve lost clients to suicide. That’s why I trained in suicide prevention and became a certified hypnotherapist—to support people as humans, not just as “matters.”

It’s also why I created The StacyM Show. Because real conversations about real-life stuff are how we grow—legally, emotionally, all of it.

Why This Story Matters (and What You Can Take From It)

I’m sharing this not to brag, but to show what’s possible. You can be a dropout, a misfit, or someone barely keeping it together—and still build something incredible.

If you're navigating separation, legal issues, or a career that doesn’t feel like "you" anymore—this episode’s for you. And if you’ve ever felt like you weren’t smart enough or strong enough? Trust me, you are.
