You Don't Have to Feel Ready. You Just Have to Start.

Has anyone ever asked you how you knew you were ready?

Because if they have, I'd bet money your honest answer was the same as mine.

You didn't.

I have never once felt ready for the big things in my life. Sometimes not even the small things. Not once. And if you're sitting there right now waiting to feel ready before you make your move, I need to tell you something that might annoy you a little. But I promise it's going to help.

Ready Is a Trap, Not a Feeling

We treat "ready" like it's a green light. Like it's supposed to switch on inside us before we're allowed to act. Ready to leave. Ready to start again. Ready to put ourselves out there. Ready to make the call.

Here's what nobody really tells you though.

That green light doesn't come first. It comes after.

You feel ready because you started, not the other way around. Confidence is built by the doing, not by the waiting.

I think about every genuinely hard thing I've ever done. Leaving something that wasn't working. Starting again from scratch. Putting my name on something new and scary. Starting treatment for cancer. In every single case, if I had waited to feel ready, I would still be waiting.

There are still things I haven't done yet because I don't have the courage. But the things I did do? I did them terrified. Readiness showed up about two steps in, once I'd already proven to myself I could survive it.

The Question That Actually Moves the Needle

So here's the reframe I want you to take from today.

Stop asking "am I ready?"

Start asking: "what's the smallest true step I can take today?"

Ready is a feeling, and feelings are unreliable narrators. A small step is a fact. You either took it or you didn't. And facts build momentum in a way that feelings simply never do.

To be clear, this isn't about being reckless or skipping the prep work where it actually matters. If there's something practical you genuinely need in place first, go put it in place. That part's real.

But so often, what we're calling "not ready" is just fear wearing a sensible sounding costume.

Your Small Step Challenge

Here's what I want you to do.

Pick one thing you've been sitting on, just because you're "not ready" yet. Just the one.

Then ask yourself: what's the smallest version of that step I could take in the next 24 hours?

Not the whole leap. The smallest true movement. That might look like:

  • Sending the inquiry
  • Making the appointment
  • Saying the sentence out loud to one person you trust
  • Writing down that first line

Do that one small thing before you let yourself off the hook today. Not because you'll suddenly feel ready, because you probably won't. But because that's actually how ready gets made.

A Few Questions to Sit With

  • What's the one thing you've been waiting to feel ready for?
  • Is there real prep work left to do, or has "not ready" quietly become an excuse?
  • What's the smallest, truest step you could take in the next 24 hours?

Sit with those for a minute. Then go do the thing.

The Takeaway

You don't have to feel ready. You just have to start.

That's it. That's the whole episode, and honestly, something I think we all need reminding of every now and then.
